Workplace Privacy and HIPAA Compliance Reminders

July 16, 2020 - SCI Communications

Please be mindful of patient privacy when working with protected health information.

While the following methods of communications can be used for logistical team communications, they ARE NOT secure for sending low-, moderate- and high-level risk data:

  • Texting via personal mobile device
  • Slack messaging

Additional information about Stanford electronic systems and risk classification guidelines can be found here: https://uit.stanford.edu/guide/riskclassifications.

REMINDER: If you transact CCTO Stanford work activity on your personally-owned mobile device, you must encrypt (https://uit.stanford.edu/guide/encrypt) and enroll your mobile device into Stanford MyDevices (https://uit.stanford.edu/service/enrollment/mobiledevice).

Other Stanford UIT-approved application alternatives that can be leveraged on your Stanford computer and mobile device:

  • Jabber
    • Approved for all risk classified data for phone and messaging
  • Spok Mobile
    • HIPAA compliant secure two-way messages, including photos and videos

Whenever you are emailing risk classified data, be sure to send it with SECURE: in the subject line. More information can be found here.

When in doubt, consult the Privacy Office at https://privacy.stanford.edu/.
